I picked up this book because the later books in the series are narrated by Steve West, one of my favorite narrators. If only I'd have noticed the "Hunger Games meets Harry Potter" in the cover, I could have saved myself a lot of boredom.

This book is a bad imitation of Harry Potter - the whole dystopian element didn't make the plot different but eye-rolling. None of the characters were interesting or even likeable. I only finished it because it was for a challenge.

I listened to the first 40% of this with my daughter during our commute. She got anxious and went and listened to the rest of it without me. I don't care enough to finish this on my own, so DNF @ 40%

Hmm... Usually when i finish a book in one day it ends up in my absolute favorites section, but this one didn't quite make it. Perhaps it's the fact that i'm a twenty five year old reading a book made for those half my age. Perhaps i set my hopes too high. I don't know. That is not to say the book is bad per say. It's a pretty solid four. Just not good enough to be a five and absolute favorite.

An absolutely fantastic story that could stand alone without it being churned out into a series. I adored the world building with this book. I can tell that it probably took McMann very little time to write, but took even longer to edit. Superb for children who find reading a boring task.
