Series reread September 2015. Even more enjoyable the second time around. Strangely this time I was less enamored with Leslie and appreciated Beverly more. Book 6 is being released in England in November 2015 and in the US in April 2016 for some weird reason so I've actually preordered the hardcover version from the UK. Seeing as it's the first time since I bought my first kindle years ago that I've been tempted to purchase a paper book I've upped my rating to 5 stars. This is an incredible series and among all its other virtues has the best transformation of good guy to villain (view spoiler) in any book or series I've ever read.

These books are a real treat that I look forward to with great anticipation every year. I enjoy the laconic and resourceful protagonist Peter and his determination to fit his magic into 21st century policing. I think the fact that most of the work Peter does is just good policing makes the rare times he performs magic even more exciting.

This book is a time-out in the overall arc of the series. Peter travels to the countryside to solve the case of two missing girls. Accompanying him is Beverley Brook, a small river Goddess, who I had never warmed to before, mostly because of the two female interests in Peter's life I much preferred Lesley. But I liked Beverley in this story. Lesley only appears in the form of some tantalising text messages and the rest of Peter's gang stays in London. I really liked Dominic, the local policeman. I hope we see him again down the road.

I had some issues with the ending. It was very abrupt and I had trouble believing that Peter's/Beverley's solution to the problem would work in the long run. (view spoiler)

I wanted some more time with old Hugh Oswald and his daughter. And I NEVER get enough of Nightingale! I wish he had his own novella or something. ...more
