Well damn. I'm impressed.

Nalini Singh was the only author in the Top authors of this genre list that was left for me to try (and Patricia Briggs I think). I'm on a paranormal binge and I'm (almost) caught up with all the other major series, so here I am. And I'm happy I waited this long, now I have a lot of audiobooks to go through until my vacation is over!

The Good: I postponed reading this book for years. The cover screamed cheap romance and the title made it seem like it was selling the raunchy aspect over plot of any kind. Needless to say, I went into this book with a very closed mind and expected a large amount of eye rolling during my read through. I found myself pleasantly surprised. Yes, this is paranormal romance. Can someone please tell me why I didn’t start this series sooner? As a fan of the sexy/dangerous mixture of Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series, I should have known she’d offer a one, two punch in a straightforward paranormal romance.

Slave to Sensation has a mental game of cat and mouse, shifters who are all about “skin privileges” and completely enthralling sex scenes. Really, Slave to Sensation in one word is enthralling.

Can someone please tell me why I didn’t start this series sooner? As a fan of the sexy/dangerous mixture of Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series, I should have known she’d offer a one, two punch in a straightforward paranormal romance.

Slave to Sensation has a mental game of cat and mouse, shifters who are all about “skin privileges” and completely enthralling sex scenes. Really, Slave to Sensation in one word is enthralling.

The romance is heady. Lucas and Sascha fall into the enemies to lovers trope, but it’s more than that. They agree to work together on a business deal, both with ulterior motives. Sascha is a Psy. Her emotions are supposed to not exist. She is supposed to be clinical, detached and logical. (Kind of like Vulcans.) This makes her kind the opposite of everything the changelings value. Changelings, or shifters, are about nature and emotion. The best example of the difference is not that Psys avoid touch, but that they’d prefer to use science to make children instead of doing things the—ahem—old-fashioned way.

Here’s the thing, though. Sascha isn’t a normal Psy. She feels and it takes constant effort to keep up mental walls, to make sure no one knows. The consequences for feeling in her world are worse than death. Only Lucas makes her feel. He makes her question what she knows about her own kind. He makes her want something more, even if it only lasts a few days.

Singh was smart in the way she brought these two together. Sascha is so cerebral and so scared of anyone finding out the truth, she starts to open to Lucas in shared dreams. Dirty dreams where she tests the waters, imagines what it would be like to touch someone, to be touched back. It’s these baby steps that make her reactions to her first real kiss with Lucas feel genuine. We get pulled through their love story with growing tension that makes putting the book down near impossible.

While I clearly devoured this book, I wasn’t immune to some of the obvious points in the plot. Maybe I read too many angst-filled novels, but I felt like the big conflicts toward the end of the novel could have been harder on them both. I expected things to fall apart and have to be repaired, and it didn’t ever get that bad. That said, the characters were engaging and the writing super sexy.

I may have immediately downloaded Visions of Heat (Psy/Changeling #2) after finishing Slave to Sensation. The romance will keep me coming back to Psy/Changling again and again.

I'm almost a little ashamed to admit that this is the first novel of Nalini Singh's I've read, although I'm well aware that she is a prominent name in the PNR genre. I've heard nothing but good things about her and I was excited to discover for myself what makes her so popular. Slave To Sensation certainly didn't disappoint and if it's anything to go by I expect nothing but great things from Singh in the rest of the series.

Slave To Sensation introduces readers to a really beguiling world and to some really unique races of people. Sascha Duncan a member of the Psy, a race of people who long ago turned off their emotions and who have since ruled their world with complete control of themselves. Psy's are unfeeling, icy people who live through logic and reason.....only Sascha is flawed. Her whole life Sascha has fought the feelings and sensations that battle logic and reason within her. Hiding the truth from her people, Sascha's hope to remain uncaring is left in tatters when she meets Lucas.

Lucas Hunter is a Changeling; an Alpha panther who is hoping to track down the Psy responsible for murdering members of his pack. Fierce, sensual and unrelenting, Lucas can't deny that Sascha arouses something in him he never expected and soon both he and his panther are determined to prove that Sascha isn't the icy individual she pretends she is and soon both Lucas and Sascha find themselves falling for the last person they ever expected; each other.

I really loved this book. The PsyNet was an interesting concept and I absolutely loved the characters Singh has introduced. Both Sascha and Lucas were fabulous to follow and read about, and I found the other characters were fantastic too. Sascha and Lucas had brilliant chemistry and featured a well told romance--I'm already dying to read about the other DarkRiver and SnowDancer members we met, as well as the few Psy's we learnt are different from the rest. Dorian, Hawke, Sienna, Mercy, Vaughn, Brenna....I'm super excited to read their stories in the future and can only imagine what Singh has in store.

Slave To Sensation was wonderfully written and I have to commend Nalini Singh on allowing there to be a real storyline within this book that didn't focus solely on Sascha and Lucas's romance; although that was certainly sexy and cheeky. They made a great pair and really suited each other.

Slave To Sensation was a novel I powered through and I can't wait to read the rest of the series to get to know the other leopards, wolves and Psy's! A great start to what I have no doubt will be a brilliant series--I'm ready and eager to dive straight into the next book!

It's been ages since I read StoS and frankly, I'd forgotten how much I loved it. Angela Dawe does a great job of the narration and it was a very entertaining listen. I do think that Dawe has only one "male" voice so while I'm looking forward to listening to others in the series, I don't think I'll be doing back to back listens (not that all the books are out yet anyway) because otherwise I think I'll notice too much that all the male characters/heroes sound the same.
