This book is a short easy read, although not the laugh-out-loud funny that it was advertised to be. It's called an "entertainment" book, almost a series of short stories revolving around the ever-challenged Professor Dr. Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld. The vignettes are amusing, some more than others, however I think it helps to be a bit older, and maybe a Brit at heart to appreciate them as written. From an heartbreaking infatuation to a nose-altering duel, he manages to muddle from one incident to ...more

I think this is my favorite series by the author. I love the characters in this book and find their "adventures" to be hilarious. The short chapters make this an easy book to read quickly and when you just have a few minutes. ...more

Tried to read this book and just couldn't finish it. Maybe others have the same problem as the series hasn't continued like the others. ...more

Of AMS’s adult series this one took me the longest to appreciate. This author’s ability to spotlight a variety of human behaviors is evident in all of his work, but of all of his wonderful characters Professor Doctor Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld is the most outrageous. I admit it took me a while to really appreciate the humor in this series, and in one case, a topic I don’t find the least bit funny, was made so ridiculous it crossed the line of unforgivable to hysterical without my even wanting it ...more

Portuguese Irregular Verbs marks the fourth series of Alexander McCall Smith from which I have read. I found this book to be more intentionally comedic than his other novels. The excellent narration by Paul Hecht certainly aided in my enjoyment and I think also added to the light comedy. This brand of humor is not for everyone, but I find myself wondering why this series is not as well known as others by McCall Smith.

After reading The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs I had to go back and read this book in the series. Definitely lived up to my expectations. Fun, with a bit of thought involved. Made me chuckle more than a few times.

This book was fantastic. If you can listen to it on audio I recommend that. It is a very funny story and the tone condescending way in which the narrator reads the book makes it all the better.

Clever, humorous and very entertaining. I believe we all desire to be as important as the good Professor Dr. Von Ingelfeld believe's himself to be. ...more
