I wasn't really sure about reading this book when I started - I know nothing about rugby at all, and the game seemed to figure pretty prominently in this book. Even the cover art is dubious. But because this book showed up on a list of Printz Award contenders, I decided to give it a try and I'm so glad I did!

I really, really loved this book. Ryan Dean, the main character, is so funny I laughed out loud. Often. And there was an unexpected poignancy that added some interesting gravitas to the story as a whole. Fair warning to anyone who wants to read it: Ryan Dean is a perv. But he's a really lovable perv, so I was okay with it. I don't think this book is perfect--some of the characterization was a little shallow, I think--but I still loved it enough to give it the 5 stars.

Flawless--an exemplary contemporary teen novel with major guy appeal, humor, drawings, romance, sports, all while not shying away from tough issues. Tough, yet tender, sweet in moments, and hilarious in others. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time--a modern master along with John Green and Rainbow Rowell. Do not overlook this book--it's characters are unforgettable and you will enjoy every second.
