This is a 2014 Printz honor book. What did you think?

For one thing, I like seeing books recognized that are at the younger end of the 12-18 spectrum! And I really enjoyed the realistic part of the story - I was immediately drawn into the world and characters. However, I thought the Pi sections totally dragged it down without adding much to the story. A mixed bag for me. I've also seen some criticisms of the way math is used, but I don't know enough to speak to that.
I adored this book and it was my pick for the Mock Newbery I participated in. After the Printz honor announcement I was greedy and hoping it'd double dip, but alas.
couldn't get into it.
