What Members Thought

Ryan Dean West is a funny and engaging protagonist as he relates the ups and downs of his junior year at boarding school-- the friendships, the enmities, the sex or lack thereof, the rugby. His voice is spot on, although I found the occasional spot art a little distracting, and like several others, felt that the last 40 or 50 pages just didn't jive with the rest of the story.

If you ever wonder what a guy is thinking when is 14, look no further, this is a book for you to read. Ryan Dean is in love with his best friend, but thinks every girl is HOT. He is afraid of getting his butt kicked but is the first to jump into a fight. Ryan Dean is a loser, or so he thinks.

I LOVED IT! Usually, when books have male protagonists, you don’t get to know the main character very much. There’s the guy, and there’s the action. This was not the case with Winger. What a perfect book for teenage and soon-to-be-teenage boys! There is quite a bit of swearing and thinking about sex (Winger is a typical 14 yr old boy), so not everyone will enjoy it for those reasons. He is an absolutely lovable and adorable character though, and would HATE being described as such. Now I have to figure out how to appropriately booktalk this in a classroom...

Ryan Dean West, a 14 year old junior at a boarding school plays rugby, deals with bullies, falls in love with an older girl, and tries to figure out life. While this book masquerades as a funny coming of age, the last section makes it clear there is a second story being told here. Heartbreaking and amazing.

The tone, language, and one sentence paragraphs aren't my cup of tea, but I will probably come across a student who will enjoy this book.
