Fablehaven was a fun, lighthearted read. I'd consider it more of a middle grade book than young adult.

The plot moved along at a pretty steady pace. Characters were likeable and realistic (for a fantasy work). The conflict kept you turning pages, and the resolution had some surprises.

It contained no romantic scenes, but there were strong family ties that bound the characters to one another.

I only gave it three stars, because a fourth star usually indicates that I would re-read the book. That's

This is cute. I will definitely be finding more in this series at my local library!

That last line felt like a generic children's line, which this book does not deserve to be labeled as. Well thought out and entertaining with plenty of twists. There's so much going on of course some things are left open ended but that doesn't matter because there's always something else to distract. The magical world is put in detail without being overly dwelt on to the point of boredom. I found none of the characters unlikable or boring, which is in itself an accomplishment. The book started really slow and I almost gave up, but I am glad I didn't, and I think that the next book(s) in the series will be faster paced as they won't need as much background as the first book.
