Ash retells Cinderella, perhaps the most retold fairy tale. What makes Ash a unique Cinderella retelling is a slow-burn lesbian romance and fae folklore. I really enjoyed both of these aspects, as well as the theme of depression. I was a little disappointed the ending didn't really attempt to retell the origin story but bypass it altogether, but I did like the results of the ending. This is the most beautiful and romantic retelling of Cinderella I have read, yet. Ash is much better than the fluffy, watered down Disney version of Cinderella. I felt like an innocent high school girl, watching her fall in love with Kaisa, The Huntress. Imaginative, modern, and joyful, this fairy tale has a new happy ending. I loved that Lo named her Aisling instead of some typical variation of Cinderella. I loved that the story included old school fae, not the typical pretty little flying Disney fairies who live to grant humans' wishes. The worldbuilding and setting had the familiar feel of old tales, yet still felt fresh.
