This story has gained a certain cachet for being the “lesbian Cinderella” novel. Yet, there’s no real passion or feeling to the story. Everything feels so effortless, from the escaping from the stepmother and family, to the affair with the huntress, to the resolution of the bargain with the fairy, all the way the events at both balls. Each event glides so smoothly into the next that I never had any true concern that Ash wouldn’t end up with her intended partner.

If you like faerie tales I definitely recommend this one. It is a re-telling of Cinderella with a few twists.

This is the most beautiful and romantic retelling of Cinderella I have read, yet. Ash is much better than the fluffy, watered down Disney version of Cinderella. I felt like an innocent high school girl, watching her fall in love with Kaisa, The Huntress. Imaginative, modern, and joyful, this fairy tale has a new happy ending. The hard part about Cinderella retellings is having to witness the cruelty that she experiences, especially because she is supposed to be so innocent, so naive, so blameless, so pure. The Cinderella archetype is kind of a bore.
