This is the book that preceded the film "The Moving Castle" by Studio Ghibly. As good as the film was, the book is better. Diana Wynne Jones manages to create a world where nothing is as it seems. Sophie's desperation at Howl and her growing acceptation of her own worth is magnificently woven into a tale of trust and friendship.
