I read this because of the movie adaptation by Studio Ghibli and I found myself liking it as much, if not more, as I did the movie. There were many differences between the two: the setting, the characters, the personalities of the characters among other things. Charming and whimsical--definitely a good antidote for the grimness of 'Catching Fire,' which I was reading at the same time. There were so many switcheroos and bits of subterfuge in the magic that I was sometimes confused and mixed up myself, which seemed at odds with the juvenile audience and lighthearted tone, but still, a very fun world to inhabit. I'll check out the sequels/companion books soon.

What a charming and delightful read!
I saw the movie and wanted to read the book it was based from.
Yes, the book and the movie are very different, but I honestly loved them both in their own way.
But back to the book...
Jones crafted such interesting and multi-dimesional characters. They are so memeorable and so easy to love, especially Howl, Sophie and Calcifer who are the three main characters.
It was a whimsical read that transport you away to a storybook setting and sweeps you up in the magic. ...more
