This book was amazing, and filled with suspense and surprise. It constantly kept me on the edge of my seat! A definite must read. :)

This was an interesting book to read, but I found it a little uneven. The book starts out rather dark and mysterious, not too intense, but slightly heavy for a YA novel. It created an interesting atmosphere, with Jacob becoming depressed and withdrawn, as the adults in his life try to convince him that he has had some kind of breakdown with the death of his grandfather (and that certain things he saw/believes are figments of his imagination). You quickly learn the truth and while it is not a hug

The story opened with a book that did not fail to snag me. Jacob, the narrator, mentions that his life has two halves: Before and After, and they, as with all important events in his life, are linked to his grandpa Portman. When Jacob repeats the tales he was told in his childhood, I was gone - hook, line and sinker. I loved the way these tall tales were the truth when he was a child but justified by more mundane explanations (if you can call the Nazis mundane) as h ...more

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a bizarre experience. Using real old photographs for the characters and the strangest of plots, Ransom Riggs has achieved a truly remarkable debut novel. Not just in the story telling, although that is great, but in the whole package of a book, in the careful choice of end papers, chapter pages and the old photographs – the whole is a complete and satisfying experience.

Typically I enjoy the YA books that I read, but I am also very picky about them. This particular novel, however, was one that slipped past my "bad, moody YA" shield. The concept of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was fine--not spectacular and not terrible, just fine--but the thing that really rubbed me the wrong way was the angsty teenager feel that ran through the entire book. It's receiving a lot of decent reviews, but this book just work for me.
