I wanted to finally read this before the movie came out, because I knew I'd probably end up seeing it. Except, I didn't have time to read it. So I decided to take advantage of the commute from hell and give the audiobook a try.
Somewhere around chapter 5, I was really getting into the story and I decided to watch the movie trailer for the first time.
I could already tell that I was going to be salty about movie changes.
Sigh. Well, anyway, I still really enjoyed the story.

Neither as bad as I feared or as good as I had hoped.
I was a long-time fan of Ransom Riggs' Strange Geography blog on Mental Floss before he resigned. But I have to admit, I was a fan mostly for the strange and spooky photography, both vintage photos and modern. The text of the articles never truly impacted my opinion of the blog one way or the other.
In this book, however, there's not enough photographs to carry the story by themselves and Riggs' prose is not well developed. I'm glad I read the ...more

I had higher expectations of this book, even after reading other people's disheartened reviews. The premise was sound, the pictures caught my attention, but the execution (as everyone else said) just wasn't there. It's definitely not a BAD book, but probably not something I would recommend.
