Once again, oh how I wish we could award half stars, because this one deserves the additional half star.

The book has a lot to recommend it. The writing is of a very high quality. (I am now eager to read Ransom Riggs blog and travel writing. A good sign to say the least.) The book uses historical photographs in an inventive way that does NOT seem too-clever-by-half (a very real risk) nor contrived.

But at the same time it is surprising how much the "construction" behind this story shows through.

I wanted to finally read this before the movie came out, because I knew I'd probably end up seeing it. Except, I didn't have time to read it. So I decided to take advantage of the commute from hell and give the audiobook a try.

Somewhere around chapter 5, I was really getting into the story and I decided to watch the movie trailer for the first time.

I could already tell that I was going to be salty about movie changes.

Sigh. Well, anyway, I still really enjoyed the story.

I was intrigued by the idea of this book, but it just didn't pan out for me. I think a great deal of that was due to the writing style. The idea of telling so much of the story in photographs was pretty cool. But then, after you looked at the photograph, the author described the whole thing again. So there was a lot of skimming to be done.

Kind of meh.

I had higher expectations of this book, even after reading other people's disheartened reviews. The premise was sound, the pictures caught my attention, but the execution (as everyone else said) just wasn't there. It's definitely not a BAD book, but probably not something I would recommend.

On a side note, I wish the star ratings allowed for half stars. That would be nice.
