One cannot emphasize how important this book is in terms of representation in dystopian/urban fantasy literature. It is one the few UF novels set in America I’ve read where all the characters are poc. L. A. Banks’ work is the only other work that springs readily to mind. It is the only one I’ve read where the characters are all Native American/Indigenous/First Peoples.

This was really good, although I missed something somewhere and at the end didn't quite get what the motivation behind the plot was. Or maybe I wasn't supposed to and it will be made clear in the sequel?

Maggie, the main character is a trained Monster slayer, ...more

The first two chapters left me a little disappointed. Something about it set off my "debut author" alarm. The plot, characters, and stakes felt at once too familiar and unclear at the same time. Monsters, angry cops, and tetchy protag who can't keep her eye rolls to herself. Seen it. Random road trip with random newcomer? What exactly is the goal here? To go to a library? But I'm glad I stuck it out, because once it gets going, I was hooked.
