Rhage and The Beast --- 4.5 Stars

Wow! I loved Rhage’s story! There’s so much that can be said but has already been stated much better by others in their reviews. Here are just a few of my thoughts and feelings.

Lover Eternal is Rhage's story in Wards wildly popular Black Dagger Brotherhood vamp series. Rhage is a hottie. So perfectly handsome, his brothers in the BDB call him Hollywood. But he has a demon inside, (literally), as a result of a curse put on him by The Scribe Virgin, who seems to have an almost god-like quality she wields against The Brotherhood.

To keep the beast in control, he must feed it- two ways preferably. Either with blood pumping, mind numbing fist-a-cuffs or ... anonymous sex.

SO. Lover Eternal is Rhage's story in Wards wildly popular Black Dagger Brotherhood vamp series. Rhage is a hottie. So perfectly handsome, his brothers in the BDB call him Hollywood. SO. We start off the book with Rhage informing us that he's sick of all the anonymous sex and is fervently wishing for what two of the other bros have already- one woman to come home to. One woman who is his soul mate.

While he's saying this, we find Mary Luce in another part of town meeting the vehicle which will bring her to Rhage. A young pre-pubescent-cum-vamp named "John"( but somehow I don't think that's what he's gonna be called when he finally vamps out) who has connected with Mary. When Bella, Mary's neighbor, is promptly introduced to John, she realizes he isn't all what he seems to be.

Being part of the vamp world, Bella knows what John will one day become, even though John has no clue himself, being orphaned and dropped off at an orphanage as a baby. Bella calls the Brotherhood in to reclaim one of their own.

Because John is mute, to communicate with the Brothers, he needs Mary to translate for him, for she rather conveniently knows the sign language he uses to communicate with.

While at the brotherhood compound she meets Rhage who, though weak from having just released the inner beast, falls instantly for Mary's sweet, soothing voice. A voice that apparently soothes and enflames both Rhage and the Beast. (The only thing that has ever truly soothed the savage beast since Rhage acquired it.)

He's hooked and helplessly drawn to her, despite the fact he should not be with a human.

Of course the main conflict involves him being with her while controlling the beast and of course, dealing with the Big Bad, a group called the Lessening Society- an Order of slayers convened by the Omega, (a malevolent, mystical figure who has targeted the vampires for extinction), for the purpose of eradicating the vampire species.

IMO, the conflict with The Lessening is way more less interesting then the internal conflicts of the Brothers, and I suppose that's why this book felt right to me.

J R Ward has created a paranormal world similar to what we've seen recently in a multitude of other vamp series.

But she does it with panache. (I thought of SK's Dark Hunter's while readiing it. In fact Zsadist mirrors SK's Zarek very closely. But The DH's seem almost juvenile when compared to the dark, tortured Brothers that Ward gives us.)

I think this book is the one that will solidify me as a fan of the Brotherhood. As I stated in the review of the first book, I am a big "Dark" fan, but couldn't resist trying the Brotherhood out since I am out of "Dark" books to read. The first one was ok. However, this one is excellent. This book has depth and character and plenty of action to move it along. I enjoyed how much he cared for her despite the flaws her body has caused by her past history with leukemia. I also love how she interacte ...more

I did like this book, I really. I liked the introduction of John. He's so adorable he could be my best friend. I mean, I could just hug him, keep him safe and fight for him. Could this JR Ward have written a more lovable character. That's me, a nurturer.

I liked Rhage. He has this crazy Beast that comes out of him when he's upset. Mostly no one crosses the line with him because his Beast can't tell the difference between friend and foe and will kill everything in sight. He is described as beautif ...more

Love it! Absolutely wonderful. I enjoyed this better than the first book. Why? Well, Rhage is amazing - My perfect hero (so is his 'Beast'). He's the perfect mix of carelessness, intensity, and lovableness (that's not a word, but I loved him nonetheless). He's funny too.

Mary was a little nononsense type with cancer, so she was always really wary. Somehow, it was nice seeing a heroine that has her own set of demons that are not related to abuse or something cliche. She annoyed me at times, like w ...more

This book was really really good. I literally could not put it down.. and when I didn't have a choice.. I couldn't stop thinking about. The relationship that blooms between Rhage and Mary was so sweet and passionate.. the kind of story that stays with you. This book also sets the stage for some very interesting situations within the remainder of the series and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Altho.. I do have to say that I'm hesitant to move on to another couple. I loved these two.
