What Members Thought

4.5 stars. I'm not sure what to say that won't end up being a spoiler for this book. Just a few pages in, I was already surprised at the obvious direction of the theme of the book. I will say that it was just completely different from what I'm used to in historical romance. A little darker, a bit sexier. Altogether wonderful. I loved Ian and his quirks, and I love Beth for seeing so much more in him than even his family really saw.
And I love the last few lines of the epilogue. I actually sighed ...more

Expectations can be a double-edged sword. More often than not, my high expectations for those books that have garnered almost universal praise are left unmet and I finish the book feeling vaguely disappointed – even if it’s a good read, it often doesn’t strike me as the brilliance I was expecting.
Along with the rave reviews, The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie also had an additional burden. The hero has Aspergers syndrome, an Autism Spectrum disorder that I am very familiar with (my nephew has thi ...more

On the surface this seems like a typical Historical romance.
"Mad" Lord Ian Mackenzie meets the beautiful widow Beth Ackerley at the opera and proceeds to warn her that the man she is engaged to, is only after her money. Being both a gentlemen and completely captivated by Miss Ackerley, Ian offers to marry her instead.
That is pretty much where the cliche' ends.

The August 2011 edition is a re-release of the original 2009 edition, with a new cover. There are no changes to the book itself.

Read this back in 09, can't believe that I didn't review it. LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I won't go into huge details other than to say that I thought Ian was handled in a fantastic way.

3.5 STARS but i gave it 4 just for having the gutts to deal with Asperger sindrome, and for doing it so well.
I adored Ian and thought the romance was nicely done from his POV. It was very emotional (as much as he can be emotional) and uniqe.
I just didnt understand how and when Beth could have fall in love with Ian, they didnt have much in common...
BTW, the murder story was boring, w/o it the novel could ahve been alot better. but hey, im a romance kinda gal, mistery never worked for me.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book, since I usually don't like my heroes being portrayed as mad, but nonetheless, I was intrigued by the storyline and the rave reviews this book was getting. I am not sorry that I tried it. The hero was different from the usual heroes in romance and the story kept my interest because of his uniqueness. It wasn't a five star read for me however. Even though I enjoyed reading about his affliction, he was not a hero of my fantasies, and I always need tha
