“If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth..”
Thus begins J.D. (Jerome David) Salinger’s classic. The Catcher in the Rye remains controversial even today, I can’t imagine the uproar it surely caused in 1951. The novel centers aro ...more

I read this, I think when I was sixteen or seventeen; I had heard about it as a story of a teenager acting like a teenager and was curious as to how literature framed that. I was severely disappointed. I found Holden annoying, I didn't understand any of his anger or why he felt entitled to whine about the things that he did. Up until that point, indeed, up until I was in my early 20's, I hadn't really experienced anger, at least, not in the way that it's portrayed in books and movies. Sure, I ha

If i could, i think i'd give this 3.5 stars. I certainly didn't hate it, but i don't feel like i quite grasp what people love so much about it.
I probably waited too long to read it. I could see my younger self really loving Holden and the conversations he tries so hard to have with people. Honestly, does anyone really like this book? I have always thought people say it's their favourite book because they read it at school and haven't read anything else since.
However, I now see that people who have read other books too (including many of my dear friends) actually like it. Tell me, are you lying people? Or is there some merit I have missed?? ...more

I had to read this in High School and I hated it. It is one of my least favorite of all the classics.Holden caulfield Got on my nerves. I cant remember Much of the storyline which almost tempt me to Go back and read it again.

Salinger captures the essence of adolescent rebellion and alienation very well, but I couldn't quite figure out what his point was. I wonder if people would still be reading this if it had never been banned.

It was much different than I thought it was going to be. I can't really say if I liked the story or just the realizations.
