Shelves: classics, should-have-read-bookclub

I would rate this a 5 star, but it was really slow in the beginning and I had a hard time getting into it. The last 100 pages just suck you in and it is hard to put down after that though. It is a story about a father who gives everything he has for his two daughters and the story of a young medical student who tries to break into high French society. The characters are very well developed, which makes for a slow start, but it also touches on the complicated balance between being a parent and be ...more

Le Père Goriot is an 1835 novel by French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850), included in the Scènes de la vie privée section of his novel sequence La Comédie humaine. Set in Paris in 1819, it follows the intertwined lives of three characters: the elderly doting Goriot; a mysterious criminal-in-hiding named Vautrin; and a naive law student named Eugène de Rastignac.
