This is probably not the best choice for an audiobook. Woolf jumps in and out of so many POVs - it gets very confusing. Juliet Stevenson did an admirable job of reading, however, and I would listen to her read again.

The story itself I found interesting, particularly all the ways the different characters' lives entwine. I can see why a lot of people don't like it, but it's an era that intrigues me. There are so many undercurrents here - class, sexuality, mental illness. I could probably read it s

Mrs. Dalloway was written shortly after James Joyce's Ulysses was published. They both do the stream of consciousness narrative thing, and Mrs. Dalloway even repeats some of the wandering around a famous UK city that takes place in Ulysses. But oh, how much more blessedly clear and understandable Virginia Woolf is. She uses conventional punctuation for one thing. I actually watched the DVD (with Vanessa Redgrave) at the same time as reading the book and found that the one enhances the other. I don't think I would have enjoyed the book as much if I hadn't seen the film at the same time. ...more
