What Members Thought
I liked Uncle Tom's Cabin. The parts with Eliza and her family made an especially good story. However, the book is most interesting as a very effective polemic and for its place in history and culture.
For pure reading enjoyment, there is a bit too much of the author obtrusively present in places, speaking directly to the reader. And a bit too much debate, philosophizing, and obvious exposition of slavery in the mid-1800's U.S. south. The discussion of values gets in the way of the pure story.

Although this book was difficult to read because of the subject matter, it was very well written, interesting, and of course, told the story in a way that made you want to see what would happen next, yet you were almost afraid to, as each atrocity was worse than the last. To realize that this was all a very real time in our nation's past made me sad. But the importance of a book like this is to make us aware enough to NEVER let this happen again, no matter what minority group we might be thinkin
