In love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.
4.5 Stars - 4 for the overall book and 5 for the audiobook experience. A tear-jerker, several times over. Emotional historical fiction set in France, about two very different sisters and the often forgotten role of women during World War 2. The audiobook is nominated for a 2016 Audie Award in the Best Fiction and Best Female Narrator categories.
Men tell stories. Women get on with it. For us it was a shadow war. There wer...more

The Nightingale is about the story of two sisters, Vianne Mauriac and Isabelle Rossignol, in France during WWII. The two are seemingly completely different women, Vianne being the loving, caring, concerned mother who's husband has gone off to join the war, and Isabelle is a young, feisty girl of eighteen who has a passion to join the fighting and go against the Nazis. It's never easy to read about WWII, but this was a pretty simple read. Good solid story but didn't have that depth I indulge in when reading about this awful time in history....kind of an oxymoron...I know.

I am always fascinated about Hitler and WWII. I was hooked almost immediately by this story of a family and their sacrifices during The Germans invading France. It was also interesting to read of all the suffering that was had by those who were not Jewish. Most stories only focus on that piece of the war but there was so much more to it.

Brilliant. A simple but very powerful and realistic story and lesson.
This one left me completely dehydrated.
