An ambitious book, and it built up well to the ending. Not a favorite, though, and not really one I would reread it. I can see how it was acclaimed when it first came out, and I guess even now. I am curious what the movie is like since it is a very dense book...

i can see why this book gets such high praise. it seems that it was revolutionary for its time. however, to a person not living in the eighties, i think that it is less powerful than it used to be. the biggest theme that it discusses is the Cold War, which obviously ended two decades ago. now, if i had read this book DURING the Cold War, i'm sure that i'd give it 5 stars.

I was a little disappointed after the first chapter, but Alan Moore eventually delivers a complex, subversive take on super hero mythology. Pieces of the narrative sometimes fall flat, or revert to the simplicity of more conventional comics, but stories like the origin of Dr. Manhattan are rich and surprising. Even when it falls a little bit short, the ambition of Watchmen is striking.
