We got a bit ambitious, borrowing a bunch of long chapter books at once. And this one came due and we hadn't read it yet. We couldn't renew it, so I had to decide whether to read it this weekend or return it and come back to it at another time. Well, since we planned to go see the movie this weekned as well, we turned it into a "Despereaux" weekend, reading this long tale in four sittings all during the weekend. I was rather impressed at our oldest daughter's ability to sit still and listen for

I think I would have given this book a higher rating -- and I think it is a cute book that most kids will like -- if it wasn't for one thing that irritated me to know end: there are these little asides to the reader, like when Di Camillo would use a word that was large and perhaps unfamiliar to the target age group, and the narrator would say to the reader "Reader, do you know what that means? I enjoyed this book. It was short and sweet. I don't prefer the narration style though. I thought the story had a wonderful lesson though and it is told in a way that is easy for children to grasp. It is also realistic enough to say that the situation was "ridiculous" but sometimes love is ridiculous. It also had a happy ending which all ages can appreciate.
