An amazingly clever and engrossing page-turner just like its predecessor and very worthy of plaudits. However, I did not enjoy it as much as the first since it was what I term a bridge book, designed to move us from here to there, and I never seem able to truly appreciate the bridge book in a trilogy. It lacks the eye-opening freshness that makes the first volume so fascinating yet withholds from us the satisfaction of a good ending. Hollow City marks the second novel in Ransom Riggs Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series and is an intriguing follow up to its predecessor that sees us discover more of Rigg’s unique world as we continue to follow Jacob and the other peculiar children.

Picking up exactly where the first novel left off, Hollow City sees Jacob and the rest of the gang journey to London as they try to find a way to help their ymbryne become human once again. Setting out to find help, they encounter new friends, a menagerie of peculiar animals and more danger as they explore the world outside their loop in 1940. The hollowgasts and wights still pose a threat to Jacob and the peculiar children, but only if they work together will they be able to reach where they need to go.

Hollow City continues to keep the steady paced storyline that featured in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children as Ransom Riggs continues to expand on his peculiar world. In this sequel Jacob and his friend’s journey from their loop, allowing us a glimpse into the world as it was in 1940 as bombs rained down on London and World War II raged.

As with the first novel, Hollow City was an adventurous tale. The writing was descriptive and lyrical and Ransom Riggs incorporates more peculiar individuals, places and situations into the story. Admittedly I’m not bowled over with emotion as I read the series, but I do enjoy it. It’s one of those fun, whimsical tales that you never know what to expect because the world the author has created is so unique and different.

I enjoyed seeing the characters interact with the world around them in this series and Riggs introduces even more colourful faces to the story. The peculiar animals were a nice addition and made me smile. So far this series has been just an easy reading experience set in a unique and alluring world. I look forward to seeing how Ransom Riggs concludes the trilogy with the final novel, Library of Souls. ...more

The story of the Peculiar Children continues where it left off, with more Peculiar adventures and more Peculiar people and animals. The reader of the audiobook's voice is young and calm, sometimes calmer than it should be given the excitement of the story, but it strikes a good balance and is how I would expect Jacob to sound. ...more

Unfortunately, I only made it to chapter three and a half. I was relatively excited to see what was in store for the Peculiars, but after a de-evolution to childlike goings-on and bickering, I couldn't help to put the book down. I'm hoping it was just my mood when I started the book, as I haven't nothing against well-written YA (even if it's only so-so and it has a great story), and maybe someday I'll be able to pick it up again.
