“At three o’clock a man walked along the sea-wall, flapping with maps. Five thousand dunlin flew low inland, twenty feet above his head. He did not see them. They poured a waterfall of shadow on to his indifferent face. They rained away inland, like a horde of beetles gleamed with golden chitin.”

Beautiful prose and attention to detail is found in this, ostensibly, nature story. As the hawk’s eye tracks movement – so does Baker in this awesome read. Man is the narrator here but otherwise absent

An absolutely breathtaking book that can, should sorry, MUST be read by anyone and everyone who loves literature and amazingly written prose. The imagery and poetic brilliance should be taught in literature classes forever. To call this a simple book about a man "obsessed" with falconry or peregrines would be doing this a great disservice. It is really something. And if you don't believe me, believe Werner Herzog, the outstanding and equally brilliant filmmaker...

If you're in the mood for a good laugh, then look no further than The Peregrine by JA Baker. This book follows the misadventures of a peregrine falcon as it flaps its way through the English countryside, causing chaos wherever it goes. The peregrine has a knack for getting itself into ridiculous situations, like getting stuck in a chicken coop or tangling with a gang of angry crows. Overall, The Peregrine is a hilarious and entertaining read that will have you cackling from start to finish. ...more
