I loved this!!! The Death of Mrs. Westaway is a atmospheric mystery/thriller following a young woman named Harriet who is in serious financial trouble when she gets a letter saying she is a named heir in the will of her supposed grandmother. Quickly she realized that she is NOT the Harriet Westaway they are looking for, but decides to travel to the estate to pose as the granddaughter in hopes of getting enough to pay off her debts. Little does she know what she is in for....

I went into this book hesitantly because I didn’t love my first Ruth Ware reading experience. In a Dark, Dark Wood was only a two star read for me. So I wasn’t expecting much heading into this book. This fourth mystery by Ruth Ware is unlike her previous books as it can be classified as a gothic mystery. Harriet (Hal) receives notification that her grandmother has passed and she is the heir. As this journey begins to Trespassen House, Hal worries the truth that she isn’t the heir will be her demise. The story takes unexpected turns and definitely picks up speed in the last quarter of the book. If you are a fan of Rebecca, you’ll enjoy this book.

*2.5 stars
This was ultimately disappointing. It wasn’t the clever thriller/mystery I was hoping for. Nothing really surprised me, and I don’t even read a ton of mysteries! The writing didn’t impress me either. There were a few creepy moments that I appreciated though, which is what the 2.5 stars are for. I also was consistently compelled to keep turning the pages, which says something about it too, I think.
