This is one of those books I leave and I'm just emotionally drained and devastated, yet I consider this one of the best books ever to be written. On reread, it's even more impactful because I actually understand what's going on. It's actually quite funny thinking how much I had no clue about. There are so many instances on the reread that you know exactly who that vaguely-mentioned character is now that you've had as much experience with Erikson as I now have. *brushes off shoulder*

Breathtaking, brutal, alien. Moment after moment that just shouldn't be working; it rambles, it explores labyrinthine plotlines, character after character with unclear motivations and emotions. And yet these are some of the most compelling fantasy novels I've ever read. This series is amazing, epic in scope but so well crafted that you come to care for each character enough that you find yourself in tears at the loss of any of them. There are certainly magical circumstances to the events taking place, the wars, the choices and manipulations of the gods, and the actions of characters, but the real magic of this series is maintained by how much the reader is invested in the characters' successes.
