Prince Maxon of Illéa is looking for a bride who will eventually be a future queen. He wants someone he can fall in love with, someone he can spend the rest of his life with. So to find his bride he sends out invitations to all girls within his age range to enter the competition of a life time. There can only be 35 girls picked. America Singer only has one thing she wants and that is to marry her true love, Aspen but he is very poor. Her parents beg her to join The Selection and Aspen agrees to Prince Maxon of Illéa is looking for a bride who will eventually be a future queen. He wants someone he can fall in love with, someone he can spend the rest of his life with. So to find his bride he sends out invitations to all girls within his age range to enter the competition of a life time. There can only be 35 girls picked. America Singer only has one thing she wants and that is to marry her true love, Aspen but he is very poor. Her parents beg her to join The Selection and Aspen agrees to it and says that she should because he would feel guilty if she passed an opportunity up like that. She finally agrees to it even though she completely doesn't want to have anything to do with it. Before The Selection even begins Aspen breaks up with her because he doesn't feel worthy of her love. He feels like he wouldn't be able to support her whenever they get married and he doesn't want to do that to her. He wants to be able to take care of her but in the end he ends up regretting what he did.

And so on America is upset and annoyed at the Prince for having The Selection and she just yells at him the first time they meet. She tells him about Aspen and how he broke her heart. But Maxon and America soon become friends. She said that was her only intention and also she was just there for the food. She tries to help Maxon by pointing out girls he should talk to and whatnot. They end up spending a lot of time together. The Prince surprisingly kisses her and she's not sure how to take it. But she ends up kissing him back. He confesses that he likes her and that if she wanted to he would end the whole entire Selection for her. America needs time to decipher her feelings.

Another crazy thing that happens to complicate things some more is that Aspen even becomes a palace guard in the mean time. He guards America's room every single night. It's pretty crazy. She wasn't expecting him at all and Maxon has no idea about him being there. He kisses her and tells her how much he loves her and misses her. He tells her that he regrets what he did. But America just tells him that she needs time. She likes the Prince but still loves Aspen. She tries to spend time with both so that she can come to a decision.

And gosh I am so impatient I want to know right away who she's going to pick. I'm not sure if she should pick Aspen or Maxon yet. Aspen was with her for two years and they were even going to get married. So how could she forget that? But Maxon is so sweet and intelligent and charming. I think she should go with Aspen because she went through so much with him. I would want to be with the one I loved longer and someone I knew from the beginning. It's a tough decision but I am also partly on the side with Maxon so I'm in between. Reading the next book will help my decision on which side I'm on be more final.

This was a lovely book and I can't wait to read more and find out who she's going to pick. She has a little bit of a competition with the other girls. They seem to be all over Maxon. I am currently waiting for the next book in the mail. Ohhh the wait is so long. I want it now. ...more
