October 2022 -
You know a book is great when it’s accidentally become an annual reread. I always love coming back to this one in October. I snuck in a reread of Carrie last month, and this is such a huge step forward for just King’s second book. I guess I have to reread The Shining soon and just keep rolling through early King books in order. This wasn’t part of the plan, but everything is eventual.

It was if God Himself had turned His face away from them
I'm always reluctant to reread books read in my younger days especially when I consider them favorites. I shouldn't feel this way; I have read so many books since then and added life experience to the way I view the world, I will undoubtedly see the book differently and there's nothing wrong with that. But I do feel this way about many things I read in my youth and this book was one of those unread since my teen years. This was my very firs ...more

I was a big fan of the diary entries about the vampires in his short story collection, Night Shift, so I was already prepared to enjoy this. While I admittedly liked the diary entries just the teensiest bit more, it’s only cause I love historical horror. My only problem is the same problem I have with the majority of King’s works; his inability to write women well. Otherwise an enjoyable vampire novel.

3.5 - First read this about 35 years ago. It wasn't as much fun the second time around.
