I really liked the first book. It had a simple plot and the characters were lacking real depth, but it was fast paced and entertaining.
The second and third one, however, I didn't dislike, but I was somewhat disappointed. Just like the second one, Heir of Fire takes a long time to really get going. The first half is incredibly slow, almost dull, and I really didn't enjoy the chapters about the witches. I mean, they sort of came out of nowhere? And so far they haven't really added anything to the ...more

Heir of Fire was so much different than the first two books in the Throne of Glass series. I don't know how to pinpoint it, but it was just the overall feeling while reading Heir of Fire. It could be the introduction of new characters, or the separation of previous characters from one another, but something felt different.

It's been a year since I've read the second book, but I think Heir of Fire might be my new favorite in the series. January is always my best reading month, so it was fitting that this book pulled me out of my slump and I finally read a longer fantasy book again.
While I don't love it as much as some adult fantasy series, it's just fun and I could definitely see myself rereading this sometime.

TL;DR Epic friendships, failure, fire, demons ... this book has it all. It's a worthy third installment in the series. While Crown of Midnight was the logical step after Throne of Glass, this book introduces new lands, characters, and relationships, and teaches the protagonists new abilities ... all the new stuff makes the plot somewhat more cumbersome, and the pacing seems a little off in places.

I guess this might be the book that get me hooked on to the Throne of Glass series. I liked the first book, enjoyed the second book but actually devoured this book!
I really liked the character development, though it would be nice if Calaena had a bit less of teen angst. Calaena has this superhero guilt complex I feel. She keeps blaming herself for everything that goes wrong. While she is a strong woman, I hate when characters are so mopey.

It's really interesting seeing this on reread--it's such a big difference from the first book, and even the second, as there's so many threads for the future buried in this one.
I really enjoy the new characters--especially Manon. Her storyline opens up a lot of worldbuilding, and has such a great current of dark and light intertwined. I'm not a huge fan of Rowan at the start, and on reread and ten years older I find his assumptions and cold superiority especially grating--about as grating as Cel ...more
