Winter is the frenetic, roller-coaster conclusion to a satisfying (if sappy) Young Adult series. Like many other modern YA series (Hunger Games, Divergent, Legend, The Maze Runner etc.) this utilises a clever gimmick of turning fairytales into modern science fiction equivalents and tying them all together. The first novel focused on Cinderella, the second on Red-Riding Hood, the third on Rapunzel and this final novel focuses on the idea of Snow White.

I really didn't like this like the first 3 but it was really good to get a wrap up of all the characters and get Winter's story too. Though I felt Winter's story wasn't the main focus like in the other books. With the other books, the character's name was really the main focus with the secondary stories being very big side plots. This had a real balance which kind of diminished Winter's story.

So Along with Winter not being the center, it was 824 pages and felt ever bit of it. There was a lot of inner dialogs, teen angst of their relationships, and self blame. For me it overwhelmed the first 1/2 of the book and still slowed it down during the last 1/3. I believe parts could have easily been cut and toned down in self talk and had a 500 page book with the whole plot. In the end we know how it is going to end and there were a little twist here and there but mainly pretty predictable. Not a bad thing only... some of the battles, especially the last one with Levana just had me wanting the end. (view spoiler) OK, this is an example of a scene going on too long with too many turns, too many dialogs, etc... I went to reading because I couldn't stand how slow it was going while listening and doing chores.

So my main complaint about the book, drawn out scenes, inner dialogs, and battles. The first 1/2 of the book did not hold my attention and was frustrating to get through. Halfway through, I'm thinking shouldn't this be over yet, or at least wrapping up but no, another capture and escape. I think I counted 6 but I might be missing some. (view spoiler) So it dragged, more at the beginning than the end, but even the end with the fights and battles.

Still it could have been 3 to 4 stars even with the drawn out plot, well maybe 3 1/2 max, but the inner dialog, angst, self blame, inner dialog, relationship angst. Really YA not usually my thing so you might want to ignore this if you love it. But I really couldn't take anymore in this book. The last 3 books had a bit of it, but it was toned down more, here it was more ramped up.

The over all story is pretty good, but getting there was a pain this time. At least it was for me. I think I bumped it up because, in the end getting the story was worth the pain (boredom / drag) that dominated the first 1/2 and was present sprinkled throughout the second 1/2. Enjoyed this series so much! Lost much sleep because I couldn’t put it down. The international (not to mention, lunar) settings were amazing. The characters were endearing, I cared what happened to the and they were all killed or nearly killed so many times I almost lost my mind. They were so different from one another, yet learned to work together by the end. The plot was very “fairytale” like—kill the evil queen and fall in love, but what made it so interesting was the little details that are ...more

I'm really glad I read Fairest before reading this one. It helped so much with the Levana/Winter backstory. No it's not absolutely necessary to read it, but you'll have a much fuller experience with Winter if you do. ...more
