Witty, insightful, imaginative...and also deeply cynical, even nihilistic. I thought that the underlying idea of a system of magic powered by the dissonance caused by linguistic translation was super cool, and the social commentary about injustice and white privilege shone an important light on some very tragic history and current social challenges. There’s no denying the author’s brilliance yet it felt extremely condescending how everything was constantly shoved in my face. I wasn’t expected to read and find nuances and draw my own conclusions but constantly was talked at and told what I should be thinking. I had such high expectations and hopes for this book. So many have compared it to The Secret History but I am hard pressed to even place it in the dark academia category. It was more a novel length essay against oppression and capitalis

Brilliant! I honestly loved everything about this book, from the world to the characters to the conclusion. There was just so much here and yet it never felt dry or pretentious and I thought the pacing was so well structured that this read like a much shorter novel than it actually was. Or perhaps I just flew through because I couldn't put it down.
