For being so well written, I’m not sure this is a book one enjoys per se.
The characterization was exceptional. When the adolescent girl’s point of view was presented, it sounded like a 12 year old. When the infirm mother took stage, you understood the devastation of migraines. McEwan does not take shortcuts by presenting caricatures. Likewise, the environment is deftly painted — the indolent atmosphere of the family estate, the horrors of combat and the medical wards. Really beautifully written ...more
