sometimes a book reaches into your chest and breathes life back into your cold, shriveled little heart.
i cried many times over the course of reading this book, and i don’t think my seasonal depression had anything to do with it - i genuinely think this is one of the most incredible stories i’ve ever read.
i started reading it a few weeks ago, and put it down for a while without really understanding why.
today was a sad and emotional day for me personally, and i decided to pick this back up… and i ...more

AUDIO

I really enjoyed this one - especially on audio as the narration does a great job of giving each character a voice. I think this would be a great listen with your (older) kids too!

A story of a man, and an island of orphaned children. It’s heartwarming, a little silly, and beautifully written.

Shelves: fantasy, humor, young-adult

Great book, not expecting, I like to start to read a book without knowing anything about it, and this one was a very good surprise. Expecting to read a normal and simple middle-grade book, well, I can only say I could feel a tear or two dropping :).
I think it is a marvelous fantasy middle-grade book or a young adult one, and this one comes with many valuable lessons, regarding empathy, discrimination, abuse... it as humor sadness, and happiness all together.

I listened to the audio version and the narrator was very good. There are many characters and he managed to have distinct voices for all of them. It is a magical book about love and kindness, and whimsical children that are very special. The whole time I listened I could envision a good movie for all ages until the end. It had events that may be socially controversial for some and for young readers.
