Eh, I wasn't thrilled with this one. The Nordic setting was interesting, and the characters were unique and complicated, but the author went WAY over the top, in my opinion, to demonstrate just how hard life had been for the heroine and just how much evil lies beneath. In a book that purports to be aghast at the violence constantly aimed at women, it felt suspiciously like it was cashing in on how much people like to be delightfully horrified at very detailed descriptions of it. A really interesting read. Evidently I know very little about Sweden, so it was interesting to discover so much about the area and political and social milieu. Neither of the two main characters are typical protagonists, since Blomqvist is somewhat amoral and Salander appears to have Asperger's. All the twists and turns kept me reading avidly and the graphic nature of the events described were very hard to read, but fascinating. I mean, it was good. It got really good in the middle, and page-turnery like everyone said it would. But the beginning just draaaaaaagged. I was warned about that and advised to keep reading "past the first 100 pages," but I'm not sure the middle was catchy ENOUGH to make up for the eh beginning. Still unsure if I'll read the next two, but I probably will at some point because I don't like leaving things (like trilogies) unfinished.
