The first chapter of this book is a clinic of stage-setting, character introduction, suspense and foreshadowing. I was drawn in immediately. This book has been on my 'probably should read but don't really want to' list for awhile, so I was amazed to be so hooked. I'm not sure there's any way that the rest of the book could have lived up to those first few chapters, and once the main character becomes a teenager and starts doing drugs (ugh), it really doesn't. I can't believe I'm finally finished. I loved and loathed this book at different times. By the end, I came to appreciate it for the epic that it was. A lifetime of misfortune and missteps while orbiting around beauty. I didn't find the main character to be particularly sympathetic but he wasn't entirely irredeemable. The characters just felt real, and no real person is cookie cutter perfect.
