What Members Thought

So far, I do not love this book and find myself wondering from time to time what the heck all the fuss is about regarding this book. I will persevere and I have hope it will pick up. My wife and I talked about this book and she says, "You must consider that at the time it was written, this was very "modern" and the characters were written in new ways."

I read this in high school and didn't much enjoy it. I know it's a classic and quite typical high school fare but I think it's too advanced for most high school students to enjoy.
The story is at best morose and while an honest depiction of a lost young man in a downward spiral it's probably NOT the best fodder for young minds.
As an adult I can appreciate it more, but I can now easily understand my earlier reacton to it. ...more

I read this by choice in my late teens. I really hated it then. I decided to re read it ( by choice again) when it was assigned to my son in high school. What a difference a couple of decades make. I really enjoyed it this time around. I understood that Holden was not just whiny but also in incredible pain. Many other insights and revelations came to me this time around which I won't bore anyone with. I've no idea if they make sense to anyone but me ( and Jack). Watch john greens fantastic crash
