One of my favorite duo's. How do you not love this ones brain?
So we have Watson in London after being discharged from the war , with little to nothing to his name, in need of a place to stay. Meets from a friend Sherlock Holmes who is looking for someone to go in on some rooms. Perfect. Watson is taken by the mystery of Sherlock right away.
Speaking of mystery, this one was fantastic. Divided in two parts, one the mystery of the murder and it's solving. The second the story of the murder.

3.5 stars. Buddy Read. Forward was fascinating. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book and learning about Dr. Watson and how he and Sherlock Holmes met and became colleagues.
Part 1 (4 stars) was lively and interesting. Part 2 (3 stars) was much slower, but I liked the love story. Jefferson Hope was quite a determined man and I was cheering for him. It was tied together nicely in the end.

Quick read- my first of Doyle’s works.
Quite fun to see the beginnings of Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes after seeing so many films and tv shows.
Having the mystery cut into with a flashback to America was weird and I nearly rushed through it to get to the “good part”- the end. I ended up really enjoying it. The backstory helped create another layer to the crime that pulled it out of a purely good vs. evil situation which I love.

I'm familiar with Sherlock Holmes from the innumerable movies, TV series and even from reading most of the short stories decades ago when I was in college. For some reason I'd never read, this, the first of the works.
While it was fun to see the initial meeting of Holmes and Watson and to once again enjoy the brilliance of these characters, there are some initial stumblings in this tale that are not present in later works. The abrupt changes of venue and the almost laughable plot-line justifying ...more
