The love once born in my heart for this book never leaves. Ever. No matter how many times I reread the book. What I discover as I reread the book as an adult and cannot escape, and what eluded me the many times I had read it as a younger woman, was the endless waves of self pity which run through the story. I can see how this was pretty exciting stuff when it was written, and why Hitchcock decided to make a movie out of it- the gloomy old house, the young heroine, the creepy servants, the crashing waves...but I think it may have lost some of its thrill over the years. It's kind of sad, in a way, that a book now needs to be paced like The Hunger Games to keep me up late turning the pages, but I think "Rebecca" suffers a bit by comparison to today's suspense novels.
