Almost gave it a 5, but the climax had a fatal flaw... and it got confusing near the end.
Trusting Mrs D re: outfit for the ball is not plausible. At all. She's been wary of Mrs D from the start - and at this single plot twist, she trusts her?!? Nope. Not buying it. And everything hangs on this point. Why force the plot like this? Perhaps I am missing something... but it didnt work for me.

Very atmospheric and tense. I’m not sure I can go as far as romance because one of the most underdeveloped parts for me was the relationship between Maxim and the nameless Second Mrs de Winter. Their relationship certainly grows and deepens over the course of the book but I can’t get myself to romance.
