A Boston mother struggles with raising four daughters while her husband is away during the Civil War. Sure it's a classic but it's still a great read today.
It presents a wonderful, slightly idealized (wholesome, moral) portrait of life at the time. And folks would probably think of the family as a moderately prosperous New England family rather than as a truly poverty stricken as they seem to think they are. Finally! I have tried to read this for years and finally pushed through it this past month. I liked the last 100 pages, but I found it so wordy. I was annoyed by the preachiness of all the women and the selfishness of Amy and Jo (my name is Amy Jo, so I might be overly critical)They did mature throughout the book, and the ending was great. Jo’s poems were lovely.
I am wondering if this book was overhyped for me or if reading it as a child would have endeared me to it more.
