Some tales of the old just need to be read. I read this tale with a group of outstanding people that helped bring life to this story.
As an age old story that most have heard or seen some rendition of throughout life it was with great pleasure that we worked through passages in chunks. Loved this. Can't believe how gripping and emotionally accessible this story is. I got a copy from the library and read it in nearly one sitting. Finished by reading aloud the last few pages. The introduction by Seamus Heaney is excellent.

Without the help of commentaries and analyses, I would only give this work 2 stars on an initial reading (and 2 stars being generous, still, without a basic respect for the work). The background and explanations from other scholars and translators is necessary to appreciate this work.
