I decided to read this book because it won the Pulitzer last year and the news apparently hadn't reached England as of February.
The book is set in a dead, post-nuclear war world that is just about the most depressing world I've ever read about. The main characters are a man, his son who was born either right before or after the nuclear exchanges, and the dead culture and world we all take for granted now.

Whew...I'm glad I read this in the course of 1 day. From an emotional perspective it was so dark and so moving it would have been hard to pick up night after night for a week. From a writerly perspective it was wonderful. I haven't read too many other McCormac books, but it seemed to me that this was a boiled down more pure and concentrated version of his style. It was both spare and rich at the same time.
