I'm not all that patient when it comes to reading epic fantasy. I might have given up on this book earlier, but so many of my friends have enjoyed this book that I stuck to it (since the ebook was free, I was able to read it while feeding my daughter, so I was kind of stuck with reading something). I'm glad that I stuck with it, because it got better. Kaladin's poor-me monologues grated on my nerves a lot, but I guess for a character to grow they need to start from somewhere? I also grew tired o ...more

1000 pages is a whooooooole lotta words for just a prologue, no? Impressive as hell that this book is readable and engaging and layered with a richly realized world being built on every page... despite the main characters never meeting each other, the plot barely getting off the ground (let alone resolved), or the WTF is happening being thoroughly revealed. 1000 pages sounds very indulgent for a prologue, and yet, I absolutely feel the need to read another hefty chunk of this.

Sanderson is a good storyteller, and I love fantasy where each chapter is from another character's perspective. This is definitely too long and has too much battle in it for my taste, but I must say that I am interested in reading the next book--when I am next ready to carry a 1000+ book around (in other words, interested but not compelled to pick it up right away). ...more

The good parts of this book were good in the same ways that Brandon Sanderson's tend to be -- if you like his other books, then this one has good things in store for you.

It's different in that this book was obviously setting up an entire series of books, and was much less self-contained that most of his other books. There were storylines that didn't amount to much at all in this book (at least, not much that makes sense yet), but which I assume will give us a payoff later in the series. While th

This was one of the best fantasy books I've ever read; clearly one of the greatest of the 21st century. Sanderson uses a tight focus on a select group of characters to advance his plot and illuminates cultures and society through the best use of 'show, don't tell' I've seen in ages.

I cannot _wait_ for the next book. Someone please keep this man writing (quickly) for many, many years to come.

I'm not a big fan of high fantasy to begin with, with a few exceptions (Sanderson's Mistborn series being one of them). I saw this offered on FirstReads and through my name into the ring, and was actually pretty surprised I won a copy. It's been sitting on my nightstand for a couple of months, a brick of a paperback, and I finally decided to give it a shot. I just can't get into it, and honestly don't really have the motivation to start in on a series where the first book is this big, never mind ...more

the first time through, i listened to this on audiobook, and i loved it. but i had no idea about the maps and illustrations i was missing out on by not reading, and i feel like i definitely picked up on more of the connecting threads of things this time through-- though that may be also because i've now read two more books in the series, so things that were just hints being dropped the first time are now things i was able to draw connections between. can't wait to reread the other two now, and b ...more
