"Sandry's Book" is the first in Tamora Pierce's "Circle of Magic" quartet. (The foursome was recently followed with a sequel quartet called "The Circle Opens".) The four books do tell a series of events, but work just as well when read out of order.

I love any book by Tamora Pierce. This series (Circle of Magic) is good and if it was by any other author I would call it great. However, since I have such high expectations for Tamora Pierce I cannot call it truly wonderful. The characters are where it falls a bit flat for me as the story line I quite like.

The Circle books are obviously aimed at a younger audience than most of Tamora Pierce's other books. Nothing wrong with that, it's just a good thing to be aware of before reading the series.

I did enjoy the book though, even though it was pretty much an introduction to the universe more than actual plot. I wonder why Tamora Pierce managed to do that so well in Alanna but not so much here? Probably because she tried to tell the story from too many viewpoints at once, instead of just sticking to on

Back when Tammy first published the Circle of Magic books, I was rather ho-hum about them. I remember being resentful that they weren't more Tortall books. I read the first one but hadn't continued on with the series. A few weeks ago, I decided I should read them for real because I had heard the newest books were actually quite good.
