Rereading after doing the first Kel audiobook...boy, these pre-Harry Potter stories were a lot shorter. And faster paced. Alanna goes through in 200 pages what took Kel about 600 pages (pun not intended). And Alanna did get a lot more supernatural help than Kel (not that she was too shabby in that department). It's good to see how much Tamora evolved as a writer, although this was a story that I remembered for eight years until I found that there were sequels.

I loved this book when I was in jr. high. It fulfills a lot of wishes I had at the time. Alanna has special powers, proves she's just as good as a boy, gets back at her bully and saves the day at least twice. But reading it now, it seems very simplistic. There's really no other magic-user at her level? Why does the King of thieves make friends with her? How is there not more palace intrigue outside the pages/squires/knights?

I gave very good reviews to the Pierce's Trickster series. Those are fun, intelligent, and imaginative books set in a very well developed, believable, fantasy world. The Alanna books however, are the first imagining of that world, and very pale in comparison. Where Aly has intelligence, cunning, and a novel perspective, Alanna has strength and speed: one of these combinations makes for more interesting reading than the other. Alanna is a full fledged character, just not that interesting.

Another quick read. The whole idea of this book, about a girl who dresses like a boy so she can become a knight, just interested me. The story moved quickly, and the characters quickly grew on me. There are a number of plot lines that will develop in the other books in the series.
