There was some interesting world-building going, the foundations of the plot were laid... and then it turned out to be smut. Oh, well, I'd pretty much decided to give up on this author in the middle of her Anita Blake series, so I didn't have high expectations of this one.

I am a big fan of Laurell K. Hamilton. I do prefer her Anita Blake series but her Merry Gentry series is quite good too. As usual, for her, it is a very well developed world with lots of violence. It can be a bit tricky to keep all the guys straight but in general I find the books to have far more positives than negatives.

Perhaps I'm jaded from reading the Anita Blake books first but Merry Gentry is very similar in many ways, especially compared to Anita's later years. And I swear, there are some lines and paragraphs that are directly from the other books. While the story seems to be a bit cliche in some aspects, it's an interesting world of fey politics and I'll keep reading to see how an independent free-thinking half-blood fits into the very regimented courts.

God help me, I loved this book. I cannot wait to read the next one.
And no, it was not about the extensive sex. I got bored with that stuff. But the male characters are very interesting and compelling, and they are part of the appeal!

What can I say? Sex. Lot's of it - but I gave it four stars for a reason......
