There’s good stuff here—lots of the sort of thought experiments that characterized The Martian, a lot of “Hatchet but in space and also aliens are there.” The relationship between Grace and Rocky was also cool to watch develop, even if there’s some handwaving over how and why they can even communicate or recognize one another as intelligent life. And I always love thinking about alien technology, the nature of communication, interstellar travel, etc.

I have to say I loved this book and I didn't understand 1/2 of it. There is LOTS of science in it which is way beyond my comprehension. The story of the characters is the half I understood and it was more than enough to keep me reading. If you liked the Martian you will love this! ...more

I'm not a sci fi fan by any measure, but I loved this book! I did skim over a lot of the science; it's not necessary to understand it all to enjoy the book. Great fun, a generally believable scenario, "oh my goodness, what will happen next" moments galore, and a fantastic first contact character! ...more
